India Electric Two Wheeler Sales 2026, 20 Lakh Units In Sales

India Electric Two Wheeler Sales 2026

A Number That Would Have Seemed Impossible Ten Years Ago

In 2017, just 1,516 electric two-wheelers were sold across all of India. The entire country. For the whole year. That number was so small it barely registered as a category. Fast forward to 2026 and India’s electric two-wheeler segment has already sold 8,01,277 units in just the first five months of the year. That is a growth of 49 per cent over the same period last year. At the current monthly run rate of over 1.6 lakh units, the segment is on course to cross 20 lakh annual sales for the very first time. What was once a footnote in India’s automotive story has become one of its most compelling headlines.

Before diving into the electric story, the broader two-wheeler market picture for May 2026 is worth understanding. Total two-wheeler retail sales stood at 18,44,947 units for the month up from 17,15,581 units in May 2025. Hero MotoCorp continues to lead the market by a considerable distance. The company sold 5,17,951 units in May 2026 a 28.07 per cent market share. Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India came in second with 4,52,420 units and a 24.52 per cent share. TVS Motor Company held third with 3,56,352 units and 19.32 per cent. Bajaj Auto rounded out the top four with 1,97,738 units and 10.72 per cent.

Suzuki, Royal Enfield and Yamaha followed with 97,885, 84,480 and 60,625 units respectively. The traditional combustion-engine hierarchy remains largely intact but the electric segment growing within it is beginning to change the landscape noticeably.

Electric Two-Wheelers A Decade of Extraordinary Growth

The numbers from 2026 only make sense when placed alongside where this segment has come from. In 2021, electric two-wheelers crossed the 1.5 lakh unit mark for the first time selling 1,64,195 units. Then came 2022, when modern electric scooters from Ola, Ather and TVS began gaining serious traction. Sales leapt 303 per cent to 6,61,633 units that year.

The one-million milestone arrived in 2024, with 1.21 million units sold. In 2025, that record was broken again 1.34 million units, with electric two-wheelers claiming a 6 per cent share of all two-wheelers sold. In 2026, the penetration level has already climbed to 8.17 per cent and the year is only half done. Annual sales have grown over 800 times in just nine years. That is not a trend. That is a transformation.

What Lit the Fuse in 2026

Growth of this pace does not happen without a trigger. The petrol and CNG price hikes of May 2026 proved to be a significant demand catalyst for electric two-wheelers across India. For the everyday commuter already watching fuel bills rise every month the economics of switching to electric became harder to ignore. The running cost advantage of an electric two-wheeler over a petrol equivalent has never been more visible than it is right now. When fuel prices go up, electric sales follow. May 2026 was a clear demonstration of exactly that relationship playing out in real time.

The Electric Players Who Is Selling What

Within the electric two-wheeler segment, Ather Energy continues to build its presence with 28,240 units in May 2026 up from 14,101 units in May 2025. That is more than a doubling of volumes year-on-year. Ola Electric Technologies sold 15,141 units though its share has slipped from 1.11 per cent in May 2025 to 0.82 per cent in May 2026, suggesting increased competition is eating into its position. Greaves Electric Mobility sold 7,695 units growing from 4,325 units a year earlier.

Newer entrants are also making their presence felt. Classic Legends sold 4,447 units. River Mobility recorded 3,720 units. BGauss Auto came in at 3,297 units. Piaggio Vehicles sold 3,056 units. The field is broadening which is exactly what a maturing segment looks like.

8.17 Per Cent And Climbing

Electric two-wheelers now account for 8.17 per cent of all two-wheeler sales in India. That figure was 6 per cent for the entire calendar year of 2025. The jump in penetration within just five months of 2026 is significant. Over the past decade, electric two-wheelers have accounted for 56 per cent of all EVs sold in India making them the single largest driver of the country’s broader electric vehicle transition. Not cars. Not three-wheelers. Two-wheelers. The most accessible, most affordable and most widely used vehicle category in the country is leading India’s EV story. That is a deeply important fact.

India Electric Two Wheeler Sales 2026: Is 20 Lakh Actually Possible This Year?

India Electric Two Wheeler Sales 2026

At the current monthly run rate of over 1.6 lakh units, the mathematics are straightforward. Seven more months at this pace would add approximately 11.2 lakh units to the existing 8 lakh. That puts the full-year figure comfortably above 19 lakh and with a reasonable uptick in the second half, crossing 20 lakh becomes a genuine possibility. The 2025 full-year record of 13.4 lakh units could be surpassed by a considerable margin. For a segment that sold fewer than 2,000 units just nine years ago that is a number that requires a moment of quiet appreciation.

What the Overall Numbers Tell Us

India Electric Two Wheeler Sales 2026

The broader two-wheeler market grew from 17,15,581 units in May 2025 to 18,44,947 units in May 2026 a healthy overall expansion. Hero, Honda and TVS between them account for over 71 per cent of that market. The traditional players remain dominant. But the electric segment growing within that market from a handful of brands to more than a dozen active sellers is slowly but clearly reshaping the competitive landscape. The next few years will be watched very carefully by every brand currently selling petrol-powered two-wheelers in India.
