Le Mans Gave Us Everything And Then Some More
Twenty-four hours of racing. Three hundred and eighty-one laps. And a finishing margin of 10.913 seconds. The 2026 Le Mans 24 Hours delivered exactly the kind of drama that has made this race the greatest endurance event in the world for over nine decades. Toyota returned to the top step of the podium after three years away. BMW came within eleven seconds of causing one of the great upsets in Le Mans history. Ferrari, the defending champion, could not make it four wins in a row. And through it all in scorching sunshine at Circuit de la Sarthe hundreds of thousands of spectators watched one of the most tightly contested finishes in World Endurance Championship history.
Toyota’s Sixth Win Built on Strategy and Nerve
The #7 Toyota TR010 Hybrid of Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Nyck de Vries did not win this race from the front. The car started from fourteenth on the grid. An early puncture in the opening phase made things harder still. Toyota’s response was strategic, pitting early, fuelling short and keeping both cars in contention through discipline rather than outright speed. The #8 Toyota of Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa held the upper hand within the team for most of the race. But an off-track moment in the ninth hour, a drive-through penalty and a drum brake repair combined to cost the #8 crew critical time.
That opened the door for the #7. A bold overtaking move by Nyck de Vries on Norman Nato into the Mulsanne corner placed the car firmly back in contention. The timing of a late Full Course Yellow handed the #7 the lead it would not relinquish. Kobayashi crossed the line to claim Toyota’s sixth overall Le Mans victory equalling the tally of Bentley. It was his second personal Le Mans win. For Mike Conway, a second triumph. For de Vries, a historic moment the first Dutch Le Mans winner in 38 years.
“We never gave up,” said Kobayashi after the flag. “Car #7 has had a lot of second places at Le Mans but finally we got our second win.”
BMW: A First Overall Podium Since 1999
The #20 BMW M Hybrid V8 of Robin Frijns, Rene Rast and Sheldon van der Linde led for periods of the race and pushed Toyota to the very limit. Second place by just under eleven seconds represents BMW’s first overall Le Mans podium since its famous outright victory back in 1999. For a manufacturer returning to the top category of endurance racing, a second-place finish at Le Mans is a result that carries genuine historical weight. The pace shown throughout the weekend confirms that BMW will remain a strong contender at Le Mans for years ahead.
The Full Hypercar Top Four
The final Hypercar classification told a compelling four-way story. Behind the #7 Toyota and #20 BMW, the #8 Toyota of Buemi, Hartley and Hirakawa completed the podium in third. The #12 Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA which had generated genuine excitement throughout the week with its consistent pace finished fourth. Ferrari’s best result was the #51 Ferrari 499P in fifth ending the Italian manufacturer’s attempt at a fourth consecutive Le Mans win in disappointing fashion. Alpine, Aston Martin and Cadillac’s second entry rounded out the top ten.

LMP2: A Heartbreak and a Polish Win
The LMP2 category produced its own drama across twenty-four hours. The #20 Duqueine car led for nearly twenty-one hours before suffering a front brake failure that ended its race in heartbreaking fashion. Into that gap stepped the #43 Inter Europol Competition entry driven by Jakub Smiechowski, Tom Dillmann and Nicholas Yelloly. Their win secured a remarkable 1-2 finish for the Inter Europol team, with the #343 car crossing the line in second. The #29 Forestier Racing by Panis car completed the LMP2 podium in third after a late charge that kept everyone watching until the final moments.
LMGT3 Corvette From 17th, Lexus Makes History
The LMGT3 class produced one of the most unlikely victories of the weekend. The #33 TF Sport Corvette Z06 driven by Ben Keating, Jonny Edgar and Nicky Catsburg started from seventeenth on the LMGT3 grid. From there, the iconic yellow Corvette worked through the entire field to claim the class victory. It was a popular and deeply deserved result.
Behind the Corvette, history was made in second place. The #78 Akkodis ASP Lexus RC F driven by Tom Van Rompuy, Hadrien David and Jack Hawksworth secured Lexus’ very first Le Mans podium. For a manufacturer that has competed at this event without a podium finish until now, that result will be celebrated with considerable pride. The #23 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage AMR of Gray Newell, Eduardo Barrichello and Johnny Adam completed the LMGT3 podium in third.
What the 2026 Le Mans Result Means for the WEC Season
The 2026 Le Mans 24 Hours was the 94th edition of this legendary race and it reinforced everything that makes the World Endurance Championship’s “Platinum Era” label feel earned. Four manufacturers Toyota, BMW, Cadillac and Ferrari all with genuine pace for outright victory. A finishing margin measured in seconds after twenty-four hours. A new Dutch Le Mans winner. A first Lexus podium. A Corvette class win from seventeenth on the grid. The WEC paddock now moves forward with Toyota holding a significant scalp and BMW, Cadillac and Ferrari all carrying strong momentum into the remainder of the season.
