Maruti Suzuki WagonR Flex Fuel: A Quiet but Historic Moment for Indian Motoring
India has been talking about ethanol-blended fuel for years. Targets have been set. Policies have been announced. But on the ground, progress has felt slow. That changed recently and the car that made it happen is one of the most familiar faces on Indian roads. The Maruti Suzuki WagonR Flex Fuel has been officially unveiled as India’s first passenger vehicle capable of running on ethanol blends of up to E85. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri were both present at the reveal. Their presence underlines just how seriously the government is treating this moment.
Why the WagonR Was the Right Choice
Maruti did not pick the WagonR by accident. This is one of the most popular and widely used cars in India; a staple of city streets, fleet operators and first-time buyers alike. Its widespread presence across the country makes it an ideal candidate for testing and expanding alternative fuel technology at scale. The tall-boy hatchback platform has been re-engineered to handle a wide range of ethanol-petrol blends from the E20 that is already standard across India, all the way up to E85. The powertrain continues to use Maruti’s proven K12N 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine but with meaningful modifications underneath.
What Had to Change Under the Bonnet
Running a car on 85 per cent ethanol is not as simple as swapping the fuel. Ethanol behaves very differently from petrol. It has a higher octane rating, different energy density and different combustion characteristics. To handle all of this, the WagonR flex fuel received upgraded fuel delivery components, ethanol-compatible materials throughout the fuel system and revised engine calibration. The powertrain management system continuously reads the ethanol concentration in the fuel and adjusts both fuel injection and combustion parameters in real time. It is a more sophisticated engineering exercise than it might appear from the outside.
This is Not a New Idea But it is Now Real
It is worth noting that the WagonR flex fuel is not making its first appearance. The concept was shown as far back as 2022. It reappeared at the Bharat Mobility Show in 2024. However, every previous version was a prototype. What was unveiled this time is a production-specification model. That distinction matters enormously. Moving from prototype to production means the engineering has been validated. The hardware works. The software is calibrated. The car is ready. The question now is not whether it can be built but how quickly it can reach the roads.
The Catch, Commercial Use Only, for Now
Here is the part that everyday buyers need to know. The Maruti Suzuki WagonR Flex Fuel will not be available for personal purchase at this stage. For now, it is being made available only for commercial use fleet operators and cab aggregators such as Ola and Uber. No pricing has been announced yet. Given the hardware modifications required to make the car E85-compatible, it is reasonable to expect it will cost more than the standard petrol or CNG versions. Maruti has also not revealed power output or fuel efficiency figures at this point.
The Bigger Question: Where is the Fuel?
A flex fuel car without E85 at the pump is only half the solution. Right now, E85 availability in India is extremely limited. It requires separate dispensers and dedicated storage infrastructure different from the E20 setup currently in place across petrol stations. This is where Minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s roadmap becomes important. The plan is to begin with 50 to 100 E85 dispensing stations in the Delhi-NCR and Mumbai-Pune-Nagpur corridors.
That number is targeted to grow to 500 stations by December this year. By the end of 2027, the ambition is to have approximately 5,000 E85 dispensers operational across major Indian cities. Puri has also confirmed that E85 will be priced significantly lower than current E20 petrol which could be the single biggest factor in driving adoption.
Why This Matters Beyond One Car
The unveiling of the WagonR flex fuel is not just a product launch. It is a signal. India produces significant quantities of ethanol largely from sugarcane and surplus foodgrains. Using more of it in transportation reduces crude oil imports, cuts foreign exchange outflow and lowers vehicular emissions. E20 petrol is already the standard. Higher blends are now being notified E22, E25, E27 and E30 have all recently received official fuel specifications. E85 is the next frontier. Flex fuel vehicles are increasingly being seen as a practical complement to electric vehicles particularly in markets where EV charging infrastructure is still catching up with demand.
