Porsche Asked a Simple Question, What Does an Electric Car Still Lack?
The Porsche Taycan has been widely regarded as the benchmark electric performance sedan since it arrived. The range is strong. The performance is genuine. The handling is characteristically Porsche. But something has always been present in the conversation around it the feeling that electric driving, however fast and capable, “still lacks the tactile engagement of a combustion engine. Gear changes. Rev matching”. The sensation of an engine pulling toward a limiter. The 2027 Porsche Taycan is Porsche’s direct answer to that conversation. And the answer is E-Shift.
What Is E-Shift And Where Did the Idea Come From?
E-Shift is not a gimmick. It is a carefully engineered system designed to recreate the multi-sensory experience of driving a car with a gearbox in a vehicle that has no gearbox at all. The system comes with a GT Sport steering wheel and column-mounted paddle shifters. Drivers can “switch between eight simulated gears manually using those paddles”. “Each gear change is felt through a physical shift jerk in the drivetrain”. Each simulated gear carries its own drag torque characteristic comparable to the engine-braking behaviour of a combustion engine. A virtual rev limiter prevents upshifts beyond the simulated redline. A gear indicator and virtual rev counter appear in the digital instrument cluster.

Interestingly, the inspiration for this feature came from outside Porsche. Andreas Preuniger, Director of Porsche’s GT division, described the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N’s simulated gearshifts as “very impressive” his biggest takeaway after driving one. That kind of candid acknowledgement from one of the world’s most respected performance car makers speaks volumes about where the industry is heading.
E-Shift is available as an optional extra across all Taycan variants. The Turbo GT gets it as standard. Each variant has its own transmission mapping and sound characteristics giving every version of the car its own acoustic and driving profile. A dedicated mode switch on the steering wheel activates or deactivates the system entirely.
The Manthey Kit On an Electric Car for the First Time

The Manthey name carries serious credibility in the Porsche world. Manthey Racing has been developing and tuning Porsche GT cars for circuit use for decades and its upgrade kits have become some of the most respected performance packages available for any road car. The 2027 Porsche Taycan Turbo GT is the first electric model in Porsche’s lineup to be offered with a Manthey Kit.
The package brings aerodynamic changes, a revised wheel and tyre package, larger front brakes and updated suspension and powertrain tuning. The result has already been demonstrated on track in May 2026, the Taycan Turbo GT with the Manthey Kit set a new Nurburgring EV lap record with a time of 6 minutes 55.553 seconds. The kit is available as a factory option or as a retrofit.
New Infotainment Five Times the Computing Power

The cabin experience of the 2027 Porsche Taycan has also been significantly upgraded. The new Porsche Communication Management system already introduced in the Cayenne Electric now arrives in the Taycan. It offers up to five times the computing power of its predecessor. Response times are faster. Menu navigation is smoother. The new Porsche Digital Interaction operating system brings a modern, minimalist interface with clear graphic structures, dynamic animations and a high-quality 3D model of the customer’s own vehicle rendered in its actual exterior colour rotatable and interactive.
Freely configurable widgets provide quick access to navigation, media and phone functions. A Themes app allows personalisation of the digital environment colour schemes that influence both display content and ambient lighting throughout the cabin. An App Centre expands the ecosystem further, with downloadable third-party apps covering audio, video, navigation, parking and charging categories. Over-the-air updates can now be installed entirely in the background after customer confirmation. The wireless smartphone charger now delivers 25W output approximately 1.5 times faster than the previous unit.
AI Voice Control and Navigation Updates

Voice control on the 2027 Porsche Taycan has been enhanced with AI support through the Voice Pilot system. Natural conversation is supported follow-up questions can be asked without repeating the “Hey Porsche” wake phrase. Google-supported point-of-interest search is integrated. The electric charging flap can be opened via voice command. A voice-based owner’s manual with tips and how-to guides is also accessible through the system. Navigation has been updated with precise online route calculation, 3D building displays and an optimised Charging Planner. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration has been expanded. The combination of these updates makes the Taycan’s digital experience one of the most comprehensive in the electric vehicle segment.
Battery, Range and Charging Updates

The 2027 Taycan is offered with either an 89kWh or a 105kWh Performance Battery Plus pack. The Taycan, Taycan 4 and Taycan 4S variants now come with the larger 105kWh pack as standard an upgrade from the previous standard fitment. The larger battery supports a maximum DC fast-charge rate of 320kW on compatible 800-volt infrastructure. WLTP-claimed range across the range reaches up to 668km depending on the variant. A battery state of health display has also been added.
On the charging hardware side, most Taycan models now feature a NACS DC fast-charging port on the passenger-side fender while the driver-side fender retains its J1772 AC port. A CCS adapter will be provided. Power outputs across the range span from 408hp in the base rear-wheel-drive variant to 1,034hp in the Turbo GT with all variants above the base model receiving all-wheel drive as standard.
153 Paint Options Including Some Famous Comeback Colours
A detail worth noting for personalisation-focused buyers the Paint to Sample catalogue for the 2027 Porsche Taycan has been updated with 16 new colours, bringing the total to 153 options. “Classic shades like Shark Blue and Python Green have returned. New additions include Loretta Purple and Rose Red”. For buyers who spend time agonising over exterior colour the choice just became considerably more involved.
Pricing and Availability

The 2027 Porsche Taycan range is available to order now in global markets, with deliveries beginning in autumn 2026. US pricing starts at $111,900 for the rear-wheel-drive base variant excluding delivery and handling charges. India-specific pricing and timeline have not been announced. Given the Taycan’s established presence in the Indian premium EV segment, an India-bound update is expected in due course.
