The 790 Duke Needed This And KTM Has Delivered
The KTM 790 Duke has always been one of the most technically impressive middleweights in its class. When it first arrived, it rewrote expectations around what a 800cc naked motorcycle could feel and handle like. But the world did not stand still. Rivals improved. The 790’s styling began to look dated. And some early reliability concerns had created residual hesitation among prospective buyers. The 2027 KTM 790 Duke is the brand’s answer to all of that revised thoroughly across ergonomics, chassis, suspension, braking and styling. The engine is unchanged. Everything around it has been reconsidered.
A New Face Inspired by the 990 and 1390 Duke

The styling change is immediately the most visible thing about the 2027 KTM 790 Duke. The design now aligns with KTM’s current Duke family language specifically drawing from the 990 Duke and 1390 Super Duke R. The LED headlight has been redesigned with a fang-shaped cluster that is sharper and more aggressive than the outgoing unit.
The bodywork is slimmer. A larger front cowl adds presence. The fuel tank has been reshaped with cuts and creases on the tank extensions that add visual tension. The tail section has been redesigned with an upswept profile, integrating the indicators and tail lights into a single unit. A redesigned exhaust with a larger silencer completes the exterior changes.
KTM’s signature graphics and the bright orange colour option, a visual trademark of the Austrian brand are both present. The 790 no longer looks like the entry point to the Duke range. It looks like it belongs alongside its bigger siblings.
Ergonomics Properly Reconsidered

The ergonomic changes on the updated 790 Duke are among the most important improvements in the package. A new tapered handlebar with a more open angle adjustable for a more committed posture if preferred replaces the previous unit. The rider and pillion footpegs have been repositioned. The seat has been redesigned to create a more natural riding triangle. Revised triple clamps and the reshaped fuel tank work together to improve front-wheel feedback and rider connection.
Despite the larger visual presence the updated styling creates, the 2027 KTM 790 Duke is claimed to be 2kg lighter than its predecessor tipping the scales at 185kg. That weight reduction, combined with the ergonomic improvements, should translate directly into a more engaging riding experience in everyday conditions.
The Chassis and Suspension Revised
The core Chromium Molybdenum steel frame carries over from the outgoing model a structure that has never been the source of criticism for the 790. What is new is a completely redesigned subframe, finished in black. The swingarm has also received revisions.
Suspension is handled by WP APEX units at both ends the same supplier as before, but with calibration changes. The 43mm upside-down fork now offers adjustable compression and rebound damping. The rear monoshock features adjustable preload and rebound damping. KTM has also simplified the adjustment process a five-click adjuster system replaces the more involved setup of the outgoing bike. A WP steering damper is now fitted as standard.
New Brakes and Tyres: Where the Real Improvement Lives

The braking update on the 2027 KTM 790 Duke is genuinely significant. The outgoing model used KTM-badged J.Juan calipers a competent but unremarkable setup. The new model introduces an in-house-developed WP radial braking system with 300mm twin discs at the front and a WP master cylinder. KTM claims the new setup offers greater stopping power, a more progressive lever feel and improved overall control. The rear uses a 240mm single disc arrangement. “Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tyres” replace the previous rubber. Together, the new brakes and tyres represent the single biggest upgrade to the bike’s real-world ability on the road.
The Engine 105hp and No Changes Needed

The 799cc LC8c parallel-twin liquid-cooled engine continues without modification. It produces 105hp and 87Nm of torque figures that remain competitive in the middleweight naked segment. A 95hp A2 licence-compatible version will be available in select international markets. The engine’s character responsive, rev-happy and with strong mid-range delivery has never been a criticism of the 790. KTM has correctly left it alone and focused the update on the areas that actually needed attention.
What About India?
The updated 790 Duke will go on sale in international markets from the end of July 2026 with availability varying by region. KTM India has not announced any plans to introduce the updated model in the domestic market. The brand currently retails the more performance-focused 890 Duke R in India at Rs 14.50 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. Whether the 790 returns to India in this updated form potentially at a more accessible price point than the 890 remains to be seen. Given the appetite for middleweight naked motorcycles in India and the improvements this update brings, the case for an India launch is a strong one.
