An American Icon Is Betting Big on India

When Harley-Davidson signed its partnership agreement with Hero MotoCorp in 2020, it was widely seen as a survival move. The American brand had struggled in India. Its own manufacturing plant in Bawal, Haryana, opened in 2011 and shut down in 2019 due to weak sales. High import tariffs had made its products uncompetitive. Dealer profitability had been squeezed. Global retail volumes had fallen 40 per cent between 2019 and 2025. The partnership with Hero was Harley’s way back into the Indian market. Six years later, that partnership is entering an entirely new phase one that is less about survival and far more about scale.

What Has Already Been Built in the Harley-Davidson x Hero MotoCorp Partnership

The foundation of what comes next is the work already done. The HD X440 was the first jointly developed motorcycle from the Harley-Davidson x Hero MotoCorp partnership. Priced upwards of Rs 2.35 lakh, it brought the Harley-Davidson badge to a price point that was previously impossible for the brand in India.

Hero MotoCorp followed with its own version of the same mechanical platform the Mavrick 440, sold under the Hero brand. The X440T later joined the lineup as an additional derivative. Together, these models helped Hero sell 14,375 motorcycles in the 350cc to 500cc segment in the last financial year securing approximately 11 per cent market share. That “placed Hero third in the segment, behind Royal Enfield and Bajaj Auto” but with a clear upward trajectory.

The Harley-Davidson Sprint Is Coming First

The next launch from the partnership is already known by name. The Harley-Davidson Sprint is expected to be the first motorcycle out of the door in the current financial year opening what is being described internally as the next launch cycle. Specific details about the Sprint’s engine, pricing and positioning have not been officially confirmed. What is known is that it will be manufactured in India and is “expected to target entry-level performance” buyers. A segment that is growing rapidly as Indian riders seek more engaging, premium-positioned motorcycles beyond the standard commuter bracket.

Neemrana to Be the Manufacturing Heart

The Hero MotoCorp facility in Neemrana, Rajasthan is expected to play a central role in what comes next. The plant is being positioned as the dedicated production base for premium motorcycles developed under the Harley-Davidson partnership. Manufacturing in India carries a significant strategic advantage it allows Harley-Davidson to lower entry costs in markets where high import duties have historically made its products uncompetitive. Hero’s distribution network one of the largest in the world adds a further commercial layer, giving Harley access to retail infrastructure that would take decades and enormous capital to replicate independently.

Not Just India Global Exports Are Part of the Plan

Here is the detail that elevates this partnership beyond a domestic story. Several of the upcoming motorcycles are expected to be exported to international markets emerging economies where Harley-Davidson’s traditional high-cost, fully imported model has been difficult to sustain. Harley-Davidson’s global president and CEO Artie Starrs told investors in a presentation last month that Hero is an important partner in the strategy to expand access to Harley-Davidson in key markets. The India-manufactured base allows the brand to reach price-sensitive emerging market buyers without the import-duty penalty that has historically restricted its reach. If the volumes follow, India could become a meaningful export hub for Harley-Davidson globally.

130 Premium Showrooms and Growing

The retail infrastructure supporting all of this is also expanding. More than 130 premium showrooms are now operational across India a number that continues to grow weekly. These outlets are specifically designed to house Harley-Davidson motorcycles alongside select Hero products positioned at the upper end of the price range. The premium showroom network is being built to position Harley as the flagship brand within the partnership drawing aspirational buyers who may graduate from Hero’s own premium models into the Harley-Davidson ecosystem over time. The distribution strategy is deliberate, layered and long-term.

Why Harley Needs This to Work

The context behind this expansion is important. Between 2019 and 2025, Harley-Davidson’s global retail volumes fell by 40 per cent. Margins weakened. Dealer profitability was squeezed by 80 per cent during the same period. The brand’s traditional strategy premium, large-displacement motorcycles for a shrinking base of loyal buyers was not delivering the volume recovery the company needed. The ‘Back to Bricks’ product strategy announced by Harley-Davidson’s leadership is an acknowledgement that accessible entry-level motorcycles, built on established platforms in cost-effective manufacturing locations, are essential for the brand’s global recovery. India through Hero MotoCorp is central to that recovery plan.

What This Means for Indian Riders

For buyers in India, the expansion of the Harley-Davidson Hero MotoCorp partnership means more choices at more accessible price points with the Harley-Davidson badge attached. Entry-level performance bikes. Cruisers. Possibly new segments that the partnership has not yet publicly named. The Sprint is the immediate next step. But the 20 new models and variants currently in the pipeline suggest that the coming years will bring a substantially broader Harley-Davidson product range to Indian showrooms than anything the brand has previously offered here.
